The three women I photographed are friends who live in my village or the surrounding area. Like me, they, too, moved to the village from their respective hometowns. I had an image in my mind of women walking through a winter landscape wearing off-white woolen clothes, and that’s where I started. Everything else—the post-Industrial Revolution landscape, the nuclear power plant, and even the makeup—was a gift of chance that changed the direction of the project. By “gifts of chance,” I mean that I decided to incorporate the unexpected. — Ellen Fries

Photographs and a booklet from the “L’Hiver” exhibition held in the fall of 2024 at Vacant/Centre (Tokyo) and Elbereth (Kyoto). The photographs overlay post-Industrial Revolution imagery onto scenes of her friends living around the village where she resides and her life surrounded by nature. The photographs are inkjet prints on bamboo paper. The booklet interweaves her diary—written as she reflects on the present and recalls the past dozen or so years—with the photographs presented in this exhibition. The cover is a two-color risograph print.
