The Dictionnaire abrégé du surréalisme was published in Paris in 1938 for the Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme at the Galerie Beaux-Arts.
Compiled by André Breton and Paul Éluard, it does not function as a conventional dictionary. Its entries move between names, objects, quotations, jokes, definitions and contradictions, accompanied by photographs and reproductions of works by Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, Yves Tanguy, Max Ernst and others.
This 1971 edition is the first Japanese translation, edited and translated by Jun Ehara. It reproduces the illustrated dictionary and adds a separate Japanese supplement containing Ehara’s introduction, material on Surrealism in 1938, texts by Benjamin Péret and Raymond Queneau, and a chronology covering 1916–1956.
The dictionary remains what it was in 1938: part catalogue, part collective portrait, part instrument for changing the meaning of familiar words.
