Hitomi Watanabe — Todai Zenkyoto 1968–1969 (東大全共闘), 2007 First Edition

A remarkable and historically significant photobook documenting the Tokyo University student uprising of 1968–69 — one of the defining events of Japan's turbulent late 1960s. Photographed by Hitomi Watanabe (渡辺晩), this book holds a unique distinction: Watanabe was the only female photographer permitted inside the barricades, giving her access to an intimate, human perspective on the occupation that no other photographer could capture.

Her images combine the tension and urgency of the confrontations with a rare sense of solidarity and quiet humanity within the barricades — students in helmets, smoke-filled campuses, the famous Yasuda Auditorium siege. Published in 2007 by Shinchosha (新潮社), Tokyo, with a special contribution by Yoshitaka Yamamoto (山本義隆), former representative of the Tokyo University All-Campus Joint Struggle Committee (Todai Zenkyōtō), who writes: “I hope that through these re-examined photographs, the reality of the Tokyo University struggle will once again be revealed to many people.”
