[OVERVIEW]

Masahiro Mori began designing for Hakusan Porcelain in 1956.

The G-Type Soy Sauce Bottle followed in 1958. Its lid could be removed for cleaning, the spout controlled the flow without dripping, and the form could be manufactured in quantity. It became one of the clearest examples of Mori’s position: tableware should work well, remain affordable and enter ordinary life without announcing itself as luxury.

Published for the 2002 exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, this catalogue surveys almost fifty years of Mori’s ceramic design through more than eighty works. Soy sauce bottles, tea and coffee sets, bowls, condiment containers and interlocking dishes show how his forms responded to changes in Japanese eating habits and industrial production.

The book also follows the balance between standardization and handwork. Mori worked within mass production but did not treat function as mechanical efficiency alone. Handles, lids, spouts and vessels were shaped around repeated gestures at the table.

The illustrated catalogue includes the G-Type Soy Sauce Bottle, Tea Set, Bowl Set, Flatware, Birds series and later hand-painted designs, accompanied by a chronology, list of works and historical discussion in Japanese and English.
