OVERVIEW

写真試論 (Shashin Shiron — “Essays on Photography”) was born from one of the most significant photographer collectives of 1970s Japan: コネクト・イン (Connect-In), founded in 1974 by eight photographers — Arakawa Kenichi (荒川健一), Kamijo Michio (上条道夫), Kamiyama Sadajiro (神山貞次郎), Kim Jeong-gon (金正坤), Koseki Naoko (古関直子), Shima Yukihiko (嶋行比古), Hashimoto Ko (橋本功), and Sakata Nobuyuki (坂田信之) — who ran the self-managed gallery “Connect-In / Rokuhon Gallery” until 1979. The journal was conceived as “a new common ground shared by photography and criticism.”

This second issue features two major contributions. Kawada Kikuji (川田喜久治) contributes Panorama: Tiger Balm Garden (虎豹別荘 / タイガー・バウム・ガーデン). Oshima Hiroshi (大島洋) contributes an essay on Eugène Atget — his relationship with Paris and his working process.
