[OVERVIEW]

On October 12, 1960, Japan Socialist Party chairman Inejiro Asanuma was attacked during a televised political debate at Hibiya Public Hall in Tokyo. The assailant was seventeen-year-old Otoya Yamaguchi.

Issued in 1960, in the immediate aftermath of the assassination, this publication begins with the attack and then follows the lives surrounding it. One section examines Yamaguchi’s family background, political associations and activities before the event. Another traces Asanuma’s public life, death, funeral and the response of his supporters.

The volume combines photographs, newspaper material and extended Japanese reporting. Its images include the attack at Hibiya Public Hall, Yamaguchi’s earlier political activity and family background, and scenes from Asanuma’s funeral and public mourning.

Also reproduced is the moment internationally known as Tokyo Stabbing, photographed by Mainichi Shimbun photographer Yasuhiro Nagao. The image received the 1961 Pulitzer Prize for Photography and the 1960 World Press Photo of the Year.

This is not a later historical survey. It is a contemporary document shaped by the reporting, language and political atmosphere of 1960.
