OVERVIEW

On the night of March 9–10, 1945, over 300 B-29 Superfortresses firebombed Tokyo in what remains one of the deadliest air raids in human history. An estimated 80,000–100,000 civilians were killed in a single night. The photographs taken that night and in the days that followed were classified, suppressed, and kept from public view for eight years.

Ishikawa Koyo (石川光陽) was the official photographer of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. He was there. He photographed the B-29s over the city, the burning of Kanda, the destruction of Ginza, the bodies, the rubble, and the survivors. His photographs were the only systematic official visual record of the raids — and they were locked away until 1953.

This special issue of Yukei Tsushin, published in July 1953 and edited by Takeuchi Shuzo, was the first publication to bring these photographs to the Japanese public. Eight years after the end of the war, for the first time, readers could see what had actually happened to their city.

The chapters document the raids in sequence: B-29s over Tokyo / The burning of Kanda / Life under the air raids / Tokyo reduced to rubble / The Ginza in flames and the Ginza today. The final chapter — comparing the destroyed Ginza with its postwar reconstruction — gives the document a temporal dimension that transforms it from a record of destruction into a meditation on survival and erasure.
